Weary Parent: Parenting Tweens & Teens

15 Weekend Entertainment Choices for August 3

by char on August 3rd, 2007

UnderdogThe weather forecast is for more heat here which makes doing anything outside, other than lounging in the pool, very unappealing. Thankfully, there are plenty of new movies, music and good books out that are geared to the tween and teen audience. Given the options, here are my five movie, music and book choices for this weekend.

MOVIES

1. Underdog - as a child of the 70s and 80s, the words “have no fear, Underdog is here” just bring back memories of sitting on the couch watching Saturday morning cartoons with my brothers. Underdog is one of the latest in a string of movies made to re-introduce childhood favorites to a new generation of kids.

2. The Simpsons Movie - while they are not my favorite, the Simpsons are certainly one of most well-known dysfunctional families and are guaranteed to make you laugh.

3. Harry Potter and the Order Phoenix - if you have a Harry Potter fan and haven’t seen this one yet, now is the time since the mad rush is over. My son saw it last week and really liked it, but said it wasn’t as good as the book.

4. Hairspray - based on the 1988 film and subsequent award winning musical, Hairspray is just fun! Even though the movie takes place in the 60s, it is a great story, with plenty of upbeat music, dancing and a positive message.

5. Bratz - oh my! Rumor has it the Bratz girls have cleaned up their act for their non-animated, big screen debut. The tween set girls will want to see it as a warm up to going back to school with its high school cliques, fashion and friendship messages.

MUSIC

1. High School Musical 2 Soundtrack - while the show doesn’t debut on the Disney Channel until the 17th, grab the soundtrack now and have a dance party of your own.

2. Aly & AJ’s Insomniatic - My daughter is hooked on their Potential Break Up song from this CD.

3. KidzBop 12 - this series just keeps going and going, but my girls love it! It is a way for them to listen to some of the edgier songs in their cleaned up versions.

4. Dignity by Hilary Duff - Hilary Duff is looking so grown up and sounding better than ever. Let’s just hope she can keep her head on straight and not follow in the footsteps of some of her peers.

5. Hairspray Soundtrack - I recommend the movie and the soundtrack is just as fun! Or really educate the kids and pick up the soundtrack from the 1988 movie version.

BOOKS

1. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7)

2. The Clique: Complete Set of 6 Paperbacks (The Clique)

3. Andrew Clements School Days Boxed Set (Frindle, The Landry News, The Janitor’s Boy, School Story, excerpt from The Report Card)

4. Inkspell

5. Princess Academy

Do you have any must see movies, upbeat music, or can’t put down books to recommend? If so, by all means, add to our list!
