Are You a Sick Day Softie?
My kids don’t really get sick very often (well, the older two at least) so when my son complained of a sore throat last night I gave him some Tylenol, sent him to bed and didn’t really think twice about it. When I went to get him up for school this morning he said he still didn’t feel good and did he really have to go?
I took his temperature and he had no fever, but he rarely complains about not feeling well and is usually pretty good about toughing things out. Just to be sure he really felt bad I let him know that if he was too sick to go to school that he had to be prepared to stay in bed all day - no Wii, no computer, no TV. He said he really felt bad and went back to sleep.
My initial thoughts were of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off - but then I realized - it’s really cold outside, he’s too young to really conspire like that, and I would be home all day.
When he finally woke up around 11 and came downstairs he seemed okay. And this is where I caved. I made him soup, let him take it in the living room to eat it while he watched TV, I took my laptop in there to work and keep him company while he watched Myth Busters, and then I had him give my “Mii” a makeover on the Wii.
What kind of push over Mommy am I becoming???
Are you a sick day softie, too? What are your sick day rules with your kids?

I usually say that my daughter can only miss school if she is either throwing up or has a fever. Of course, I sometimes make an exception, depending on how bad off she is (as parents we’re usually pretty good at reading our kids).
I wouldn’t say if she’s too sick to go to school, she’s too sick for TV or the computer, since those don’t require a lot of effort and keep them busy when they can’t leave the house. But I usually do that with something comparable physically. Like, no gymnastics or Girl Scouts.
Just this past weekend my daughter wasn’t feeling well. On Sunday she was supposed to altar serve in church and then go to Busch Gardens with some friends. She tried to tell me she wasn’t feeling well enough to be on her feet and altar serve, but that she’d be fine to go to Busch Gardens. Yeah right. I told her it was both or neither.

I’m a softie too. While I make them stay in bed and sleep it off as much as they can, I do let them watch television when they wake up. Usually we watch something educational though. If they’re going to be home anyway, they might as well learn something.
