Weary Parent: Parenting Tweens & Teens

Crash Proof Your Teens

by SP on July 9th, 2006

Driving School Neon Sign (13“Learning to drive is an exciting rite of passage for most teens — and a nerve-racking one for their parents. Especially when you consider the statistics: Within the first year of getting their license, as many as 40 percent of teen drivers have an accident. And while most crashes are minor, data indicates that every year 5,000 to 6,000 American teens are killed in car accidents and another 300,000 are injured. Novice young drivers also pose a threat to others on the road: Nearly two-thirds of those killed in accidents involving teen drivers are pedestrians or occupants of other vehicles, reveals a recent report by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.”

This has to be one of the scariest times you will have to live through. Not only do you have to suddenly hope that your teens will drive responsibly when they are out on their own, you also have to worry about the other drivers that are out there. My husband took a course a couple of years ago on learning how to drive when an emergency occurs and as a result, he is constantly thinking ahead and has avoided a number of accidents. This might be a good idea for teens too.

Just yesterday we pulled up to a stop light and in the car beside us, was a teenaged girl with a cigarette in one hand and a cell phone in the other. That leaves no free hand to actually drive?? The roads are definitely a scary place to be these days!!
