Do Your Kids Need Counseling?

by SP on May 16th, 2006

The powerful wind and rain of a hurricane pummel a building. My kids went through two hurricanes, but neither seemed to be too bothered by what they saw. Perhaps they were too young for one of them or they were at the stage when they believed that they were invincible for the other. But, I can understand how, under the right circumstances, living through the hurricanes that have been ripping through the southern states the last few years, could leave a lasting impression on children.

“ARCADIA — DeSoto County children suffered the emotional effects of Hurricane Charley long after the storm ripped through town, with few getting the counseling that could have helped them.

A study released Monday by the University of South Florida interprets the results of an April 2005 survey sent home to the parents of DeSoto County elementary school students.

About 78 percent of the children whose families responded to the survey showed at least one symptom of post-traumatic stress syndrome, according to the study. At the same time, the majority of parents who reported their children had high levels of stress symptoms said “they did not feel their children would benefit from counseling,” the study states.”

I just finished reading the list of the post-traumatic stress syndrome, and I definitely spotted a few that seemed very familiar. It took me years to not freak out everytime a storm approached, so maybe counseling would have been a good thing for me.

I hope that families take advantage of the services offered in Florida.
