Weary Parent: Parenting Tweens & Teens

Giveaway 1: You’re a Good Mom Book Pack

by char on April 21st, 2008

You’re a Good Mom packA few weeks ago I reviewed the new book by author, Jen Singer - You’re a Good Mom (and Your Kids Aren’t So Bad Either). It is seriously the most entertaining parenting book I have ever read and so full of funny stories, sane advice, and “I’ve been there” moments. Here is a short excerpt from my review:

For 21st Century mothers, there seem to be just two choices: Super Mom or Slacker Mom. One’s bad for you; one’s bad for your kids. So what’s a mom to do? Jen offers secrets for raise perfectly good kids in that sweet spot between flash cards at breakfast and “donuts for dinner, kids!”
Jen’s book is full of common sense advice, served with a side of humor and sass. The chapters have titles that are also the secrets like “Super Mom is Faking It”, “Your Kid’s Birthday Party Isn’t Your Coming-Out Celebration”, “Your Kid Shouldn’t Be Wearing a T-Shirt That Reads Future Trophy Wife” and “If You Think You’re a Cool Mom, Your Kids Think You’re a Pushover.”

Since I am not willing to give up my personal copy, Jen has graciously sent a You’re A Good Mom pack for me to give to one of our readers this week. What’s included? Start with the book, You’re a Good Mom (and Your Kids Aren’t So Bad Either) and then add a bar of handmade Hawaiian Malama soap (this smells amazing) made from oatmeal, grapefruit and Litsea essential oils courtesy of Kona Natural Soap, a Momma Needs a time-Out door hanger, and your own rubber ducky.

How do you win it? It’s easy. Share a story, sighting or comment about a Super Mom or Slacker Mom moment you have had or witnessed in the comments below! I know you have one!

Leave your comments between now and midnight Friday, April 25th. The winner will be contacted via email, so please be sure you leave a valid email address. Please leave your email address in the box under your name instead of in the comment section. Due to shipping costs, this giveaway is open to US and Canadian addresses only.

This is part of the big Bloggy Giveaways being hosted at Don’t Try This at Home. Stop back in - I will be adding more giveaways all week long!! Don’t miss a giveaway - here’s my complete list.

You’re always a mother, no matter how old your kids are! And sometimes, you have to force yourself to be a ’slacker’ mom and be a ‘backer-offer’ mom, which is sooooooooo much harder than being a super mom! LOL!
Just being a mom is a total blessing and I love it!
    Great giveaway! :o)

Of course I can only recall “slacker mom” moments…My 3 year old saying during my Bunco night…Mom, can you put down your wine and please get me a sandwich! I’m so hungry my insides hurt. NICE!

I hate to say it but I think I have been a super mom. I have been taking care of a former 28 weeker since 04/20/07 when he was born 12 weeks too early and we have been on a long road and we have endured alot and I deserve this.
    Thanks for the giveaway!

Oh my…I’m constantly a slacker mom! But I did have a Super Mom moment last week. As an incentive to keep attendance up here at the end of the school year, the school where I work and older son attends has been having a contest. If your classroom is in the top 10 classrooms for attendance for the week, the entire class got to wear pajamas to school one day. Guess who forgot all about it until we got to school? Yep, me! So son didn’t come up and beg me for pjs, but I felt horrible for forgetting. I grabbed him up, got someone to watch my class, and speedily made it home and back with boy in pajamas in about 20 minutes! I reminded him that he had a mama who loved him lots to do that for him! So one super mama point for me! LOL

Please stop by and enter my giveaway as well!

So, I’m in the bathroom and my 8 yo son comes in the house from the back yard calling as he walks toward my room,” Mama, where are you?” So I answer, (put a little attitude in yer voice as you read this part)”I’m in the bathroom.” He totally missed the attitude part and assumed I meant,(put some syrup on it now),” I’m in here, Sweetie, can I serve you in some way?” The nerve, and he wasn’t even bleeding or anything!

How about the day I forgot that the hot lunch service at daycare was not avaiable (it was on the monthly calendar) and didn’t send a lunch for my daughter. We got a call from the director asking if we were bringing her anything to eat. I was mildly comforted to learn that we were only one of 25 parents who did the same thing that day. Still, it was an…ahem…proud parenting moment.

I’m a slacker mom in that my 4 and 6 year old daughters make their own breakfast, lunch & snack, plus rinse & load their dishes and do other chores. I figure if I’m supporting them, I can get some labor out of them…lol

Oh, and I would never have them wear a “Future Trophy Wife” t-shirt, but it did make me laugh! I’d love to win! Thank you for the chance =)

I’ve had my share of both — my super mom moment of late: planning a 4 hour birthday party for my 12 year old daughter and letting her have 8 friends over; my slacker mom moment: futzing around this morning until after 9am and then my 6 year old asking “do I get to have breakfast today mommy?” Sheesh. (Usually she gets her own — but who knows why she didn’t today?)

Slacker mom moment - My baby eats cat food daily. I don’t mean that I feed it to her (I’m not THAT bad!) but she is walking and she grabs a handful every time I’m not looking. I’m forever doing the finger sweep and pulling out all the chunks of food.

Hmmm…..I probably have good examples of both. But for this post, I’ll share my super mom moment. . . . Yesterday we ALL got lick ‘em tattoos, even Mommy & Daddy. Our littlest (19 mo) is still walking around showing me her star tattoo. And every time my 3 year old whines or causes trouble, I ask him to show me his tattoo and he immediately stops misbehaving to show me! The 5 year old loves hers, too. What fun such a simple thing can be . . . OH, and another supermom moment happened two weeks ago when my husband and I spent 11 hours over the course of a week putting together a wooden swing set for the kids. Whew. . . before becoming a parent we really should have had an intro course! ha ha!

Slacker mom moment–my son was getting in to the cereal cabinet while I was cooking dinner. It was fine, until he got a bag out of a cereal box, and then dumped it on the floor. I was too tired after a long day, that I not only didn’t do anything about it, but let him eat the cereal off the floor!

Slacker mom moment… finding a part of a chicken nugget under the table and not being able to remember the last time we served those for dinner.
Super mom moment… watching my 2-year-old play and knowing that we’ve nurtured a love of books and music and puzzles, despite the mounds of electronic toys our families send our way.

Wow! There are so many stories here, it’s going to be hard to choose a winner.

As for Super Mom, Rebecca, I write about her in “You’re a Good Mom.” In short, she’s faking it. It’s all propaganda, so take heart. She only puts her feet up in the gynecologist’s office.

Well, my *most* slacker mom moment was last month. I was nodding off on the couch during PBS Kids, and my then-6 year old says, “It’s OK Mom. I’ll watch my brother so you can nap. I’ll wake you after Cyber Chase.” He then tucked me in.
    Yeah, I took that nap.
    LOL.

One of my slacker mom moments was not changing the sheets for 2 days after my newborn spit up on them twice…I’m talking about my own bed here, not the crib! I just put a towel on top of the spot and continued to sleep there. I drew the line when he had a leaky poopy diaper in my bed. I mean a girl has to have standards.

  • Joy
    Apr 22, 2008 at 7:25 pm

When I was pregnant I was a major slacker mom to my toddler. I would be so tired I’d let her wander around my room or sit in my bed while I slept/rested an extra hour in the morning.

Needless to say I would wake up to makeup smeared all over her darling face, toilet paper strewn in the bathroom, toys all over my bed—all while she grinned, happy as a kitten.

Yeah, I learned my lesson! I would absolutely love this book and thank you for your consideration in this giveaway!!!

Two days ago I had my super mom moment. I did the dishes and eight loads of clothes. I moped both the bathroom and the kitchen. I took my kids outside to play. Plus I picked up the living room and cooked supper!

I felt like a slacker when my son complained of a hurt arm for 4 days before I took him to the doctor…it wasn’t broken, but strain. He needed a permanant splint for 10 days. The doctor said see the swelling and bruising right here?? Duh? Well, I listen a little more carefully to the kids complaints now!!! Thanks for the offer!!

My most recent Super Mom moment was this past weekend when I splurged on a plastic swimming pool and 3 bags of colored Crayola sand for my two girls. They spent several hours playing in that sand with not an ounce of whine to go with it. That was the best $40 I’ve spent all year. The Crayola sand is so soft and fine and they just loved that it was colored.

People think I am a super mom because I have 7 kids. Sure, they are all DRESSED, but that doesn’t mean I have it all together. I don’t like being put on a pedastal. I am real, I am human, I err all the time.

I am working so hard to find the “super” in even the not so “pretty” moments. Perhaps the most “super” thing I’ve done is make the choice and sacrifices to be home with my girls and to give them each other…some days it doesn’t feel “super” but I think thats because I listen to everything from the outside world and not the truth! I think it is super that I feed them….even if some meals are better than others…that I work hard to train them up with discipline and love…funny how many of these “slacker moments” people are mentioning are sometimes just being practical and doing what we need to do. :)

Well MY mom had a slacker mom moment, when I was in jr.high. She forgot to pick me up after school when I had an extra band practice, in the middle of winter, in Canada. You know before the days of cellphones, and such, and of course I had no bus fare. I had to walk 2 miles home, not dressed for the weather. But I’m all grown up now, and have forgiven her (mostly)!

Once at the dentist, there was a mom who made her children sit in the opposite section of the waiting room from her. She proceeded to lay down on a chair and take a nap. Meanwhile the kids started to destroy the waiting area, even turning a table upside down and stacking chairs on top of each other. I finally stepped in and told them to all sit down quietly and read some stories to them.

I felt bad for the mom, I could tell she was tired. But I was also irritated at her lack of responsibility.

What an awesome giveaway! That book sounds great. I recently moved and went to a playdate with a bunch of other moms from my church and as always there was the mom that is perfectly made up, beautiful styled hair, makeup, clothes not out of place, no chocolate stains on her sleeve from a chocolate-covered toddler. I was so jealous, but also not because I was thinking “man, she must have to spend a lot of time to look like that”. Luckily she didn’t have the SuperMom attitude to go with it or I don’t think I would have liked her lol, she was very sweet and talked about soccer-mom rage at her kid’s soccer game because another 4-year old was better than the rest and kept taking the ball. LOL fun stuff.

I think I have been a super mom at times. My baby is graduating high school in May. Between his older brother and him, I have attended more sporting events than I can remember. They both play golf, and we spent our summer vacations taking them to golf tournaments. The youngest has 2 state championship rings for golf, and we are heading back to state on May 5th and 6th. I know I will miss this when he is gone. My neice could use the book, she just went through a nasty divorce. Thanks for the chance.

My slacker mom moment came when I arrived home from a 10 hour work day to my teenage sons, who had been off school for the day, asking what I planned to fix for dinner. I was too tired to even think about fixing anything, they are capable (and good at) fixing family meals and I was sick of the diet I had been trying to follow. My answer was ‘I’m having a few cookies and a bowl of cereal before taking a bath; you’re welcome to join me at the kitchen counter’. Of course they didn’t like my offer so they fixed their own dinner that night. They still ask if we’re having cookies and cereal for dinner.

    Slacker Mom

I took DS to the bookstore and used a gift card given to my DH to buy him 5 new chapter books. Then we went to the shoe store where I had to practically sit on him to keep him from running up and down the aisles and trying on the high heels.

We pull into the driveway and I tell him to go straight inside and start getting ready for bed. Immediate whining about not having watched any TV, and wanting more to eat for dinner (mind you we’ve been gone for almost 2 hours and it’s almost 9 o’clock). I get mad, basically say he’s being a brat after all the stuff he just got and so much for being able to stay out late like a big kid (DS is 5).

Cross go the arms, out go the lips, in comes the attitude and he says he’s not going to bed EVER. So I say goodnight, get out of the car, set the alarm and go inside the door to count to 30. At 10, the car alarm goes off. I let him out and he’s got tears and snot DH comes up to see what all the commotion is and DS tells him “Mama locked me in the car and I was so scared I wanted to throw up. I could have died in there!”

I tried not to laugh because he was so upset. Not my proudest moment. Thanks for letting me vent and for the neat give away.

So I work from home doing stuff on my computer. One time when little man was just starting to get around (and before I had my laptop), he was playing on the floor at my feet while I was working. I saw him chewing on various cables, but I figured it was ok as long as it was the “plug” end.

That is until I saw “USB device not recognized” pop up on my desktop and realized that he was chewing on the end of a USB cable that was plugged into the back of the computer (and therefore receiving POWER!!!!).

Yeah, I should get the “slacker mom of the year” award for that one!

I’m not a mom (yet), but I am a teacher, so I will share a slacker mom story with you. I had a parent-teacher conference with the mom of one of my kindergartners last year & I told her that I was worried about her son & his lack of progress made throughout the school year. I then proceeded to suggest a few things that she could work on at home with him, to which she replied (very meanly, I might add), “Well, I guess we could try, but I really think that’s YOUR job - I mean, you are his teacher!”…which would explain why he had the learning issues that he had in the first place! NO one in his home wanted to extend the school-to-homelearning environment
