Having Fun with Nails
We have an afternoon off and my daughter has decided to give herself some pampering. She wanted to give herself a manicure and pedicure so she pulled out her Skin and Nails: Care Tips for Girls book by American Girl for inspiration.
She soaked, filed, buffed and lotioned her hands then set out on painting them a silvery white. We applied two coats of silvery white polish and let it dry fully. Next she wanted a dark pink stripe right down the center of each nail. I did my best to make them all straight lines, but hey, I’m just a Mom - I don’t have the hand-eye coordination to make it perfect. Once that dried we added the clear coat, and I can honestly say, that they look really good.
For the past year my daughter has begged for a salon manicure. When she first asked about it she was a big-time nail biter. I told her it was a waste of money to do a manicure with such short nails, but if she could stop biting them and grow them back out a bit, I would consider it as a treat. She has done a great job of not biting them, and they really do look good. I may just have to suck it up and take her as an end of school year treat in a few weeks.
What are your thoughts on teens and tweens getting professional manicures? Waste of money or a nice treat once in a while?

About a year ago my mom, Skyler and I got a manicure and pedicure. It was so much fun. It’s not something we would do all the time. It’s too expensive to be a regular thing, but it’s a wonderful girls day out thing to do every now and then.

Absolutely a good idea. Gets her feeling grown up, completely bypasses the idea of feeling grown up by getting, say, a tattoo… and its a nice treat. Oh, yeah, if the opportunity arises, do it.

My daughter will be 11 in less than 4 weeks. She has been getting professional manis/pedis for years now. I take her about once a month. She takes really good care of her nails and especially after a mani. I don’t see a problem with tweens/teens receiving professional services. She will also paint her nails herself in between manis.

It sounds like you had a lovely afternoon with your daughter! I don’t see a problem with a tween getting a professional manicure as a treat now and then. But I do worry about cleanliness at nail salons - I guessed I’ve watched too many 20/20 stories on infections and such.

It think it should only be for a special occasion with tweens and once they are working then decide if they want to do it regularily and pay themselves. Our culture is placing too much emphasis on self indulgence, external beauty and spending, spending , spending, on me me me. Doing it at home is great because it teaches something and gives Mom and dd time to talk and bond.
