Helping Kids Move

by SP on January 19th, 2007

“”Moving scares you at first; it might even make you sad. All your friends are in one place, and you’re in another. I was scared when I moved. I worried if I would even make new friends and if anyone would like me. …” Those are the words of eighth grader Jenne Terre, but they sum up the feelings and experiences of many children who move each year. Whether it is across town or across the country, moving can be very stressful. Moving can greatly affect a child’s concentration and behavior in school, and children may have trouble articulating their feelings. But teachers can help alleviate some of the stress that surrounds an impending move. ”

I can’t stress enough how stressful this can be on a child. I moved schools only once in my life and it was a very difficult year. But it definitely toughened me up! I do have one good memory of that year and that was of my teacher. His name was Mr. Shutka and he was wonderful! And this alone was amazing because I had never had a male teacher until that year.

I moved between grades 5 and 6, and again between grades 9 and 10. Each time I was sad, nervous and did not want to go. Each time I ended up loving my new school and made a lot of friends. It was fine.
