Weary Parent: Parenting Tweens & Teens

Monday Morning Musings

by char on April 2nd, 2007

Good morning everyone! I hope you had a great weekend.  Lots of little things going on here.

Last Thursday we went to Middle School orientation at the school we were originally zoned for, but are no longer zoned for. I was so impressed at the professionalism and organization of the staff. I liked what I heard about the organization of the school and most of the way they handle their gifted and talented program.

The kids also got report cards last week. Good for both of them - all A’s and one B each.  After the orientation at the middle school my son suddenly sees the importance of his end of year grades - especially since they will be used in determining his placement (along with test scores) in some of his classes.

On Friday the DARE officer came to visit my son’s class. She brought the beer goggles for them to all try. My son said it was really weird and hard to try walking on the straight line with them on. The goggles they tried gave them the effect of having consumed 3 beers. I wish I would have recorded his reactions - he didn’t like the way it made him feel and he stated that he doesn’t ever want to drink that much.

This week we go to the orientation at the Middle School we are zoned for. They are going to have to put on a really good show to sway me from requesting a transfer to the school we visited last week. The school is in a bit of an upheaval with a new (not yet named) principal and all.

I am looking forward to Easter this weekend. We will be getting together with family and that is always fun. Do you get Easter baskets for your kids still?  We got them until we moved out on our own, so my kids are safe for many years to come. I am going to need to make a trip to Target this week to get things for their baskets. What do you put in your kids’ baskets? Any unique ideas out there?

I hope the sun is shining in your part of the world and that you have a great week. Stop back by often - there will be plenty to share this week. I just have this feeling.

    Hello Char,

Thanks for sharing your recent middle school orientation experience. I will be interested to see how the next meeting compares. Locally, we had a few parents leave the orientation meetings more anxious than they entered. What did school #1 do to help reduce the stress parents were feeling?

    Regards,

    Joe

During my daughter’s middle school years, I had her transferred to a school that we were not zoned for. The school for which we were zoned had lots of behavioral problems-besides which most of her circle of friends from elementary school lived in another area and were going to a different school. On top of which, she’s a math whiz and the math program at the school I had her transferred to was much better! Tons of good reasons to send her to another school!

I’m now very happy she went there. She was able to remain with her friends. There were fewer behavioral problems and, most of all, she had a math teacher who has been the biggest influence of her school years. She still stops by to visit him occasionally and talk to him about her math classes and college.

    Hi Char,

I stopped by to look at the TT and got sucked in! I have two daughters, one 10 and one 15 years old. I’m reading with interest your posts about the middle school dilemma, and thought I’d share the changes that just when through our lives:

This week is my 10 year-old daughter’s first official week studying at home with me. Not homeschool, but an online private academy. I’m not the teacher (which I’ve never wanted or felt qualified to do); the curriculum is 80% based online through the Internet, and she has two mentors, one for German, and one for everything else. She meets weekly with each mentor, and I’m here if she needs help with her studies.

So there are other options, if neither of yours work out for whatever reason. Have a great day!

Nadine - that sounds like a really interesting option! Tonight we go to the orientation at the middle school we are zoned for. We went to the one for the middle school I want my son to go to last week. It will be interesting to compare the two presentations.

    Thanks for stopping in!
