New American Girl Dolls Julie and Ivy From the 70s

Chances are if you have girls between the ages of 5 and 14, you are very familiar with the popular American Girl doll and book series. On September 10th, American Girl will release the newest member of the historical doll line, Julie. Julie is a nine-year old girl in 1974, growing up in San Francisco along with her best friend Ivy. Their stories revolve around the events of the time from women’s rights, title IX, coping with a move, her parents’ divorce and more.
As a Mom, it is kind of hard to believe that “we” are now “history”! I don’t feel old enough to be history, but I was nine in 1977 and so many of my friends were 9 year olds in the 70s too. I am looking forward to discovering Julie and Ivy’s stories with my daughters. I’m sure that much of the history presented through the stories will mean more to me now than they did when it was actually happening.
The new books that will be introduced as part of this series include:
- Meet Julie, by Megan McDonald
- Julie Tells Her Story, by Megan McDonald
- Happy New Year, Julie, by Megan McDonald
- Julie and the Eagles, by Megan McDonald
- Julie’s Journey, by Megan McDonald
- Changes for Julie, by Megan McDonald
- Good Luck, Ivy, by Lisa Yee

I think these dolls are so ugly. They are just Elizabeth and Jess with different wigs and eye colors. I will read the books when my library gets them but I don’t want the dolls or stuff. I think American Girl is selling out their ideas just to make $$$. There are lots of other times in history that I would rather have seen.

Wow!!
This is cool. I wasn’t born until 1976 but it is really neat to see a american girl doll from the decade I was born in. I have no kids but I will by these books just for myself.

I have just read books 1-3 in Julie’s collection. I really like Julie because her story can relate to kids more than the other books. Her stories talk about problems that could happen now. The doll is cute so even if they are “elizabeth and jess with wigs and eye colours” they are stll different and have their own story. I love American Girl because children not only get a doll to keep forever but they learn more about times in history. The clothes show us what girls like us would have worn in that time period. You should at least buy the books for Julie and Ivy because they are good reads for girls any age.

My girls LOVE AG dolls. No matter what they look like or re-look like. I’d MUCH rather them be playing with dolls and reading their stories than be glued to the computer or zoning out in front of the t.v. American Girl Inc. allows our daughters to (no matter how the world has changed) have the two things that we had: imagination and the luxury to remain little girls as long as they want to be.

I think it’s exciting that they are introducing two new historical dolls to the fold. Although it’s true that maybe they’re starting to manufacture too many new dolls too quickly, I think this particular 1970’s era will have a lot of significance for people, similar to how Molly and Kit have influenced with their more contemporary stories. Even if some people believe that the American Girl company is “selling itself out to make money,” my feeling is that as long as these characters and stories continue to help children take more interest in historical contexts, then I think it’s a good thing. Actress Abigail Breslin herself–who is playing Kit in the upcoming movie–said that filming it has helped her “learn so much about history in a very real way.” Can’t ask for much better than that for today’s kids :)

I whole heartedly agree - the dolls, books and movies are a wonderful way for the girls to learn about history. When we visited my Grandmother last year my daughter brought Kit. My Grandmother remembered wearing dresses like Kit’s, the hairstyle, and my daughter was able to compare notes with her. Not only did it make the Kit story more real for my daughter, it made it easier for my daughter to relate to her Great Grandmother who she sees every few years.

It’s cool to see how the Julie doll looks so reminiscent of the 1970’s era, just in the outfit and hairstyle that she arrives in. All you have to do is think back on the show “The Brady Bunch,” with the bell bottoms and the long braids down the side of the girls’ hair. American Girl really does a good job at reflecting these time periods accurately, and there’s no doubt that a lot of young mothers out there will really identify with Julie and Ivy’s stories. It’s just another way for them to share American Girl with their kids, which is great.
