Positively Friday - What Did Your Kids Do Right This Week
We haven’t done a Positively Friday in a while, but it is time to get back to it! It is Friday and if you are like me, it’s been a LOOONG week. Take a few minutes and look back on the week and rather than letting all the things your kids did wrong take you into the weekend, note the positives and let that shine through.
For us, this has been the week of becoming accountable for your actions. I found out that both of my older kids have been slacking a bit at school and I had to call them on it. The 4th grader got called on it in the form of a conference, having to clean out her back pack and generally having a meltdown. Once that was over, she faced the week with a new sense of responsibility and maturity. I am very proud of her for that.
My 6th grader got his interim reports yesterday and I was incredibly disappointed! This is my child who gets perfect scores on standardized exams, thinks on a level much higher than most of us, but his LAZY streak (which he comes by honestly) just caught up with him. It seems that he has been telling me that his work is done, but he doesn’t turn it in. The transition from elementary school to middle school is tough - the kids are given so much more independence and responsibility at the same time. I’d like to think he is still getting used to that. Anyhow, after we called him out on his shortcomings, I was impressed that he put a self-imposed ban on computer during the school week on himself, started working on some of the missing work and completely reorganized his backpack and folders.
As for my 6 year old, well, she made progress in a different arena. She has been doing swim lessons and Wednesday was her first practice in the competition pool. It was obviously a challenge for her, but she tried so hard and didn’t give up like many of the other kids. She did say it was very hard and she wasn’t sure if she was ready for that, but I’m sure it will get easier each week.
So, what did your kids do right this week? How did they overcome or handle a challenge? Let them know they did a great job - you will all have a better weekend for it!

What a great idea! I don’t always take the time to reflect — I hope you continue this.
My six-year-old was having problems on the bus with an older boy — he would grab her and make her sit with him. We talked about different ways to handle it. Yesterday she told me that he wanted to sit with her and she said to him, “I will only sit with you if you behave properly.” (Yes, she says “properly.”)
He didn’t behave, but I was so proud that she practiced asserting herself and using words as a first resort to solving a problem.
(Then I called the principal.)

I can’t think of any one specific thing my daughter did great this week, but she was good in general. We did have a blast going to a Harlem Globetrotters game together on Tuesday night. And she has kept her grades at As, except for Math. She missed some days of school due to an illness and didn’t bother to turn in her missed work. One of those things was worth 100 points, bringing her from an A in the class to a C instantly. ACK. But focusing on the good, all other classes are still As and she’s been trying to bring the math grade up too.
Speaking of grades, you should see if your school will sign up with Progress Book. It’s a website I can go to every day to check on my daughter’s progress in school. It’s been really great, because I check it daily and there are no surprises when her progress reports/report cards come out. And if I see that she is missing an assignment or her grades are slipping, I can act accordingly and get her back on track.

What a great topic.
Well, my 11th Grader Isreal was celebrated at the Honor society Celebration at schoool for being on the High Honor Roll AND the presidents List (YAY).
Isaac, my 8yo in the 3rd grade finished a Helluva’ long and if you aske me (far to advanced) African American Biography report on the Football player Sean Taylor. What really suprised me was that he didn’t whine a bit. He sat, wrote it out and did lots of reading… uhhh Now Mommy has to type it up :)
Great Topic!
