Should You Buy Your Graduate a Luxury Car?

by SP on June 15th, 2006

That is the topic that Luxist is discussing this morning…

“The three used cars most desired by young drivers (16-25) are Ford Mustangs, Jeep Wranglers and Honda Civics. They’re small, on the sporty side and well within the realm of affordability for many recent graduates and their families. Younger drivers are drawn to cars that seem faster or more “fun” than sedans, which are perceived as being “serious.”

But what about safety features??

My son just leased a new car. I can’t remember the name, but it’s one of those retro styles and no it isn’t the PT Cruiser. What I can’t understand is why they don’t load them up with safety features and make the sun roofs, mp3 players and all the other gadgets the little extras that you have to pay for.

To get a safe car these days, you almost have to trade up to a luxury model. And with the prices these days, who can afford them? Yes, my daughter graduated this year and I would have loved to have given her the Lotus she wants. Unfortunately, it is way out of my budget.
