Shrek the Third - The Movie and The Games
I took the kids to see Shrek the Third yesterday - mainly because we have seen the first two and really enjoyed them, but also because we have been playing the Shrek the Third Gameboy and PS2 games for the past week and we wanted to see how the two compared to the movie.
First, the movie. Making a sequel that even comes close to the first smash hit is a gamble that movie producers continue to be willing to make. While the first Shrek movie was by far the best one, the third one wasn’t bad. The story line is not as good, but the multi-level humor is great. As we sat in the theater I noticed that there were two distinct sets of laughter - the kids and the grownups. The kids laughed at the slapstick - the baby burps, etc, while the grownups laughed at the 70s/80s inspired jokes and music that was inserted in all the right places.
My favorite part of the movie was definitely the exchanges between Donkey and Puss in Boots. Let’s just say I have a soft spot for Eddie Murphy’s humor in these movies. At the end, during the credits, Donkey and Puss in Boots were dancing and it was just too cute.
Now for the video games. We were lucky enough to get the opportunity to review the game. All of my kids - ages 11, 8, and 5 have been able to pick up the Game Boy Game and run with it. I even gave it a spin and it was really funny listening to my 8 year old “coach” me through the levels. I made it to level 3 of 20, while my son is already at level 14.

The goal of the game is to protect Far, Far, Away from Prince Charming. You maneuver your way through scenes and scenarios, get bonuses and fight off the bad guys as you go.
The PlayStation 2 version is more complex and obviously has richer graphics. It also has a two player mode and mini-games which are outside the context of the main quest. My son and his friend loved the mini games - Castle Attack, Shrekleboard, Frog Herder, Shooting Gallery, Catacombs Leap and Ships Ahoy. Each of the characters in the game has special powers, too. You will need to use Shrek’s Ogre Power, Fiona’s Flying Kicks, Puss n’ Boots’ Cute Puss in order to get back to the kingdom.
Did you see the movie yet? What did you think of it?

Char,
We also saw Shrek the Third this weekend, and you are right, there definitely was some veiled adult humor that my husband and I enjoyed. And the kids loved it! I haven’t given a thought to the games that would follow, but thanks for the review - I will look for them next time I make that type of purchase.

Neena - I thought some of the best adult humor was done through the use of music - especially during the scene where all the princesses get together.
Kate - its fun and worth seeing. Let me know if you liked it.
