Spring Cleaning Your Kids Closet

by char on March 13th, 2007

Trading Spaces Instant Large Collapsable Storage Box #18033If you are like me, spring just can’t get here fast enough!! The air is getting warmer, days are longer and the kids are itching to get the shorts and sandals out!

Our house doesn’t have big closets so I have been forced to do a seasonal switch over at least twice a year. Here is my spring cleaning routine for each kid’s closet.

I arm myself with a large garbage bag for trash, a cardboard box for items that will be given away, another box for items to go to my favorite consignment sale and a plastic storage bin for items that need to be put away for the fall.

I go through the closet and drawers and sort the items accordingly -

  • If it is too worn out, stained or not worthy of another day on this planet - into the trash it goes.
  • If it still has plenty of wear left, but is not quite resale quality - it goes into the box for my favorite local charity (a thrift store that serves our immediate local community)
  • Items that are too small, but are nicer, name brand clothes go in to the box to take to consignment in the fall or get designated as hand me downs for certain friends.
  • Items that are still in good shape, but are definitely out of season, but may still fit in the fall (or can be handed down to a sibling) go into the plastic tub for storage.

Then I pull out the spring/summer box from last year and see what will still fit, will still be loved or get used. Anything that is not going to used again goes through the same steps as above. We have been the gracious recipients of many great hand me downs over the years so I seem to have boxes for a few cycles out at any given time.

Once I have done the transition, it makes it much easier for me to budget for and purchase new clothes as needed.

How do you manage the season switch with kids? I’d love to hear your suggestions.
