Study: Heavy children prone to becoming heavy preteens
” Many parents consider baby fat a harmless childhood phase, but new federal research finds that pudgy preschoolers face a greater risk of becoming porky preteens.
The study by the National Institutes of Health and several academic institutions suggests that overweight children as young as 2 years old are at least five times more likely to be overweight or obese in early adolescents, a scenario that often leads to a lifetime struggle with weight.
“Once you’ve the problem, it’s a lot harder to fix than really preventing it,” said Allison Topper executive director of Pennsylvania Advocates for Nutrition and Activity, the state’s obesity prevention task force.”
The reason I’m bringing this up is the fact that if October is anything like September, Halloween is going to arrive before you know it. And that means a lot of candy and empty calories. Now’s the time to decide how your child is going to consume all of those goodies.
I used to do a lot of volunteer work at Jamie and Brittany’s school and the day after Halloween was a nightmare. The lunchboxes were literally filled with candy. You would almost think that the children packed their own lunches. Maybe we need to concentrate on the fun part of Halloween and not simply the candy.
