Weary Parent: Parenting Tweens & Teens

The Allowance Issue

by SP on November 15th, 2006

Money Doesn't Grow On Trees: A Parent's Guide to Raising Financially Responsible Children “Teach your child responsibility and money management through the assignment of household chores and the dispensation of a regular allowance. Learn the best way to set your child’s allowance — and whether you should reward your child for helping out with household chores.”

Times have changed since my kids were on the receiving ends of allowances, so I’m turning it over to you for discussion. When should you start handing out money and what do you expect in return? Is it a child’s right or should there be “strings” attached?

I really wanted my 13 and 15 yr olds to learn budgeting- so we’ve been giving them about 40 dollars a month. Once a month. They clean their rooms and their bathroom and vacuum and bag the recycling, as part of members of the family. They can choose to buy lunch or bring lunch- we’ll buy food for them to pack, but if they want to buy lunch they do so with their money. And if they want to bring lunch they pack it. If they spend all their money at the first of the month they’ll have nothing left. Like real life!
