The Challenges of Middle School
Does this sound at all familar?
“Parents expect more from their middle school kids. They say:” Why can’t you help out more? Why don’t you do the dishes . . . pick up your clothes . . . cut the grass? Why are you so moody? Grow up!”
Teachers expect more, too. In middle school are expected to analyze. Teachers no longer simply ask who, what, when, and where questions.
Instead they ask, “Why is this so?” and “How do you know?”
Teachers say: “Get organized. Do your work. Study. Pay attention. Quit fooling around.”
Most young people really do intend to do what’s expected of them. But they sometimes get into trouble when they simply don’t see why things have to be done right now. They’d rather like on their beds for hours, staring into space, trying to make sense of the past, present, and future; trying to understand the world and their place in it.”
Gee, I sure hope that I was understanding when my kids were this age. Sometimes we forget that they are still kids! I know that we have to prepare them for the adult world, but sometimes it would be nice if they could just stay a kid for a little longer.
