The Fairy Chronicles
“Inside you is the power to do anything”. This is the underlying theme of the new book series by J.H. Sweet called The Fairy Chronicles. This series of chapter books features a cast of otherwise normal girls who find out that Mother Nature has blessed them each with special gifts - fairy powers.
Each fairy has a specific name, wand, gift and mentor. For example, Beth Parish is the Marigold Fairy who has the gift of being able to ward off nasty insects and carries a Pussy Willow Branch wand. Her friend Jennifer is the Dragonfly Fairy, who is very fast and agile and has a Peacock Feather for a wand.
In the first story, Marigold and the Feather of Hope, The Journey Begins, Beth sets off for a few weeks with her eccentric aunt who lets her know of her fairy powers. Her aunt is a Monarch Butterfly fairy and introduces Beth to the Fairy Handbook and other ways of the fairy. Beth has to become a fairy in an emergency as the Feather of Hope is lost.
The story is full of absolutely beautiful illustrations and messages. One of the quotes in this story that I loved is:
“Life. In our search for meaning, there are two important things to consider: how we treat other people and what we teach children.”
Another fun feature of the stories is the bonus material at the end - including recipes, crafts and other fairy activity ideas.
The books are aimed at the 7-10 year old reader, but my 5 year old has been captivated by the pictures as I read her the story. Of course, my third grader thought it was an easy read, but she is already asking to start the next book in the series - Dragonfly and the Web of Dreams (The Fairy Chronicles, Book 2).
With summer vacation fast approaching, this is a great series for a second or third grader to add to their summer reading list!
