There is Something About Boys and Trains

I have yet to meet a little boy (or a big boy for that matter) that doesn’t like trains. There is something about trains that brings out the kid in them whether they are 3, 63 or anywhere in between.
When my husband was a kid, his Dad had a train layout in the basement. Each Thanksgiving he would start reworking the train layout for Christmas and would get the greatest joy out of sharing the magic of the trains with everyone who stopped in. One of the earliest memories my son has, is watching the trains in his Grandfather’s basement each time we visited.
For my son it all started with that basement. He immediately fell in love with Thomas the Tank Engine and during those preschool years we amassed quite a collection of them. He’d spend hours creating layouts through the house and absorbed every bit of train knowledge he could at every turn.
As my son has gotten older, he and my husband have kept the train tradition alive. They have dedicated the upper level of our garage to the trains and spend countless hours up there each year - especially between Thanksgiving and Christmas, up there tinkering with the trains. (The picture above is from two years ago)
Last year around Christmas, they invited a handful of the men in our neighborhood to come over for the evening - to look at the trains. It was absolutely amazing. The men, most of them over 60, were instantly taken back to their childhood’s. The smiles on their faces were awesome and the stories they had to share were priceless.
The boys have been up in the train room almost every day recently - adding to the platform, rewiring the track, cleaning off the buildings and getting the whole scene ready for the winter. I can’t wait to see this year’s finished version - and I know the neighborhood guys are looking forward to another gathering, too.
