Transformers Movie Review

I just got back from watching the new Transformers movie with 3 boys - all age 11 - for my son’s birthday. So, what did I think? Well, it is definitely a BOY movie. And it earned every bit of its PG-13 rating. In other words, I urge you NOT to take your 7 year old to this film!
Things I liked:
- The look on my son’s face! He and his friends were truly entranced in this movie and based on when they laughed, the boy jokes were well placed.
- The technology behind this movie is AMAZING. The transformations from car to robot and back took some unbelievable artistic and creative talent.
- The cast. Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, Josh Duhamel, Jon Voight, and John Turturro, really put a finishing touch on this movie.
- Bumblebee’s slick transformation from a beat up car with a mind of its own to its super hot yellow Camaro Autobot.
- Looking for the advertising within the movie - how much did Pontiac and Chrysler have to pay to out their brand in front of us for two hours straight.
- The interaction between the robots and the humans.
- That the girl with the brains was far from geeky!
Things I didn’t like:
- Did I mention this was PG-13? If you have a child under 13, I highly recommend that you rethink your decision to take them to this movie. Apart from the obvious violence, there was a little too much sex talk and bad language in the film for my liking. Call me conservative, but the movie would not have suffered one bit minus the scene where Sam’s parents ask him what he was doing in his room. There were a few other instances that made me want to reach over and cover the boys’ ears - and then I reminded myself that they probably already heard that language on the school bus!
- The movie was a bit choppy in parts - jumping from Sam scenes to military scenes and all, but as the movie pulls together in the end, the flow of the movie is much better.
Overall, it was a good movie. I really think my husband would have enjoyed it more, but I am glad I saw it as it gave me a little more of an understanding of what makes boys tick! I asked one of the boys something about Ironhide and how they know which one it was and I got a detailed blow by blow description of the robot’s features - they just laughed at me for not noticing the details!
What did you think of the movie? Am I too conservative or was the rating right on the money?
And while we are on the topic of bringing back our childhood - who wants to see Underdog? How about Bionic Woman which is coming to network TV this fall?

I don’t think I’m going to let my 5 year old watch it. It’ll be just me and my 13 year old. Thanks for the heads up Char :)

My 13 year old and I finally watched it yesterday. Your observation about the language was spot on. I’m glad I read your review first. Thanks Char :)

My friend and I are in our 30’s, we’re waiting for awhile before going to see it–probably this weekend. Well, no taking the nephew for now. Like the reviewer said: “the summer spectacle to end all summer spectacles and the realisation of a million childhood fantasies.” :)
