Weary Parent: Parenting Tweens & Teens

Valentine’s Day Gifts for Dating Teens

by Christine on February 9th, 2008

Valentine’s Day gift Valentine’s Day is only a few days away and many teens are scrambling to get their significant other a gift. It seems like many guys are getting their girlfriends jewelry and many girls are getting their boyfriends watches. But are those appropriate gifts for teens to be giving? A typical teen relationship last anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. Jewelry and watches seem a little too personal for such a short relationship. Not to mention how expensive these items can be. I don’t want to see my kids spending their whole month’s paycheck on a gift for a Valentine’s Day.

So instead I’ve brainstormed some gift ideas for teens that are a little less expensive and a little more appropriate for the teen crowd. Here is a list of inexpensive or even free ideas you can share with your teen.

  • Chocolate candies and/or flowers. It may not be creative, but is still a great gift.
  • A humorous Valentine’s Day card.
  • A poem written by you.
  • A framed photo of the two of you together.
  • If you don’t have a good picture of the two of you, make an appointment at a cheap photo studio and get some. There are a bunch of inexpensive studios at the mall.
  • A homemade gift such as a pencil drawing, a friendship bracelet or a necklace.
  • A stuffed animal. If she loves dolphins get her a stuffed dolphin. If you call her “honey” get her a stuffed honey bee.
  • A book by his/her favorite author.
  • A music CD from his/her favorite artist.
  • A mixed CD of music that has meaning to your relationship. I know that sounds so 1980’s, but it’s still a meaningful way to express how important the relationship is to you. Plus you can make a great graphic for the top of the CD.
  • A $25 gift certificate to his/her favorite store.
  • An article of clothing, such as a sweater or sweatshirt.
  • Cook him/her dinner. Make his/her favorite meal.
  • Have a picnic at home with a blanket on the floor.
  • Treat him/her to dinner at his/her favorite restaurant.
  • Give up your action flick for one night and take your girlfriend to a romantic movie.
  • Buy her candles and bubble bath
  • Spend an evening together playing his favorite video game. Kick his butt in Guitar Hero.

Do you have some other gifts to add to the list? Share your ideas in the comments.

Those are some really good ideas for teen Valentine’s Day gifts. Like you said though, most teen romances only last a few weeks to a few months. Buying something expensive is generally not a good idea. I particularly liked your suggestion to make a special music cd. Kids are really into music so its effects will be very much appreciated. My teen made a special music cd for his girlfriend for this year’s Valentine’s Day. He went a step further and put a very nice label on it. He used my DiscPainter to add a picture of he and his GF from the beach last summer. He then added their names and a short poem on the picture and printed it right on the cd. It was such a sweet gesture. I am sure it will go over well on the big day. I will let you know how your suggestion worked…
